LTE phone shipments will grow tenfold this year

smartphonesAccording to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global LTE phone shipments will grow tenfold to reach 67 million units in 2012. It is a breakout year for 4G technology. Companies leading the growth spurt will include Apple, Samsung, HTC and others.

Neil Shah, Analyst at Strategy Analytics, said, “We forecast global LTE phone shipments to grow tenfold from 6.8 million units in 2011 to 67.0 million in 2012. Major countries driving LTE growth this year will include the United States, Japan and South Korea. Multiple operators, such as Verizon Wireless, NTT Docomo and SK Telecom, are aggressively expanding their LTE networks.

How often does an iPad break?

SquareTrade, the largest independent warranty provider in the world, just completed an extensive report on 
iPad breakage rates
. Based on data compiled from 50,000 SquareTrade iPad customers, the company found that iPad 2 owners reported breakage 3.5 times as often as iPad 1 owners.

Smartphone battery life a significant drain on user satisfaction

JD PowerAs smartphone users place increasingly complex demands on the functionality of their devices, satisfaction with battery performance is becoming a critical factor in overall satisfaction as well as brand loyalty, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2012 U.S. Wireless Smartphone Customer Satisfaction Study.

The study also says 70 percent of smartphone users have signed in to social networks, and they are continuing to integrate the devices into both their personal and business lives.

iPad reviewers love the Retina display, speed, camera

writes in the New York Time
s that the new Apple iPad should have been called the iPad 2S, because it makes only incremental changes to the iPad 2, like the iPhone 4S. The technical improvements in the new device, which is available Friday, “keep it at the forefront of desirability – just ahead of the snapping jaws of its Android competion.”

Like most reviewers, he’s dazzled by the “very, very sharp screen.” The new Retina dispaly is four times sharper than that of the iPad 2. Apps rewritten for the new screen are “incredibly sharp,” he says and high definition videos are “dazzling.”

Small businesses ignoring risks of data protection on mobile devices

A study by online backup service  Mozy® (NYSE:

),  found that an increasing number of professionals (80 percent) work remotely and rely on personal devices such as smartphones (63 percent), iPads (30 percent) and laptops (80 percent) to access company data.
